What about a piece of art being a functional everyday object? The limited IKEA ART EVENT 2021 collection presents a new vision for art and home where the boundaries between art and functional design are blurred. Five artists and designers have created beautiful art pieces that spark curiosity and conversation, which, at the same time, double-up as useful household objects. Our new vision of art and home doesn’t play by the rules, so please go ahead and touch the artwork.

Daniel Arsham
Throughout his practice, multidisciplinary American artist Daniel Arsham transforms everyday objects into exciting conversation pieces that defy our expectations of what they should be. Since the beginning of his career, he has been interested in the subject of time. Daniel’s contribution to IKEA ART EVENT 2021 is a clock surrounded by a white glazed ceramic drape that also reflects his ongoing preoccupation with questions of movement, materials and architecture.
Humans since 1982
Creative duo Humans since 1982 refuse to be labelled as either artists or designers, instead they want their work to reflect the dynamism of human nature. Much of their practice explores technology from an alternative perspective, and their contribution for IKEA ART EVENT 2021 is a comment on how a modern technological device – the drone – may be viewed in the future. In their hands, plastic drones turn into wall pieces – arranged in an aluminium frame in the style of an insect collection.
Stefan Marx
Berlin-based artist Stefan Marx is interested in how the arrangement of certain words or phrases can express a mood or feeling. His typographical works are inspired by conversations he overhears, as well as lyrics and sentences plucked from his favourite songs and books. Marx thinks that his distorted transparent vase and knitted cotton throw designed for IKEA ART EVENT 2021 will bring joy into any home as they combine an emotional impact with everyday function.
Sabine Marcelis
Sabine Marcelis is motivated by getting to the core of a concept or a material – she hopes her designs create a moment of wonder, compelling an emotional response. For her contribution to IKEA ART EVENT 2021, Marcelis was inspired by Italian painter Lucio Fontana’s cut canvases and wanted to translate this simple gesture to a light fitting. Her carbon steel panelled wall lamps come in two sizes and change five different colours to create magical moods.
Gelchop
Hailing from Japan, creative collective Gelchop deconstruct everyday objects by combining them with different elements to change their meaning and function in a fun and compelling way. For this collection, they have put their own spin on what is arguably the most iconic IKEA item of all: the Allen key, and have created a table lamp and torch based around its design.
