How does an air purifier work?

The air in our homes can contain pollutions and particles from dust, pollen, cooking and gas chemicals, which can irritate us or cause health problems. That’s why we’ve made our range of air purifiers, because we believe everyone deserves cleaner air at home.

They work by circulating the air in a room using a fan, passing it through filters to capture large particles like hair and dust, small particles like pollutants and pollen, and finally, various gaseous pollutants and unpleasant odours – if you are using a gas filter.

Where to place an air purifier or sensor

Maximise your air purifier’s impact by making sure the flow of air isn’t blocked. The air outlet should also blow away from people to avoid drafts.

Where to place your STARKVIND

Smart STARKVIND comes in a floor-standing or table model, optimised to purify a room up to 20m2 and suit your home decor.

Where to place your FÖRNUFTIG

FÖRNUFTIG can be wall-mounted or free-standing, and displayed among your favourite art. It’s optimised to purify a room up to 8-10m2.

Where to place your VINDRIKTNING

VINDRIKTNING works just as well in small and large rooms, as the air quality is usually the same throughout. Just remember to keep your VINDRIKTNING upright, off the floor and away from dust or dirt to keep it working optimally.

Air purifier filters

Both FÖRNUFTIG and STARKVIND air purifiers have a pre-filter, which captures big particles such as hair and dust, and a particle filter that’s optimised for capturing about 99.5% of smaller particles such as dust and pollen.

There’s also a space for an additional filter for gas cleaning, which absorbs pollutants such as formaldehyde and reduces unpleasant odours.

You can buy these filters and extras from an IKEA store, on IKEA.com or through the IKEA app.

Filter replacement and maintenance

How and when to replace a filter

How often you replace your filter depends on the environment it’s in and how often you use your air purifier.
  • FÖRNUFTIG and STARKVIND air purifiers both have an LED indicator which will illuminate when you need to check your filters and possibly replace them.
  • If you’ve connected your STARKVIND to TRÅDFRI gateway, your IKEA Home smart app can send you reminders.
  • It’s a good idea to check the particle filter regularly, and we recommend replacing them every six months. Although in some homes, they may need to be replaced more often. If possible, try to change both the particle and gas filters at the same time.

Cleaning and maintaining a filter

You can easily remove bigger particles from your pre-filters with a vacuum cleaner. Filters for smaller particles and gas filters can’t be cleaned and should be replaced when dirty to keep your air purifier working optimally.

We also recommend cleaning your STARKVIND sensor regularly by carefully vacuuming it.

Frequently asked questions

Which pollutants can be captured by an air purifier?

The filter included in the package is optimised to remove approximately 99.5% of smaller particles, such as PM2.5 particles, dust and pollen. The gas filter absorbs various pollutants such as formaldehyde and other VOCs, and can reduce unpleasant odour from smoking or cooking.

What is PM2.5?

PM2.5 are small inhalable particles that measure 0.1-2.5 micrometers. PM2.5 particles can occur from things like cooking, various sprays, open fireplaces or outdoor air seeping in.

How can I tell if my air purifier is working?

While the air purifier is turned on, place your hand in front of the air outlet. If you can feel a breeze, the purifier is working.

You can also check by looking at the filter inside. If it looks dirty, that means your air purifier is absorbing pollutants.

Can I leave STARKVIND in auto mode all the time?

Yes, STARKVIND uses its built-in sensor to adjust the fan speed based on the particle level (PM2.5) in your home. This will make sure that STARKVIND is always cleaning your air from particles in an optimal way.

I see there is space for another filter in my air purifier, what filter should be there?

The air purifier comes with a filter for particle removal, but you can add a filter for gas cleaning to use in addition to the particle filter.

I leave my STARKVIND in auto mode but the fan speed is always very high, why is that?

When STARKVIND is used in auto mode it uses its built-in sensor to measure the particle level (PM2.5) in the air and adjust the fan speed accordingly. If the fan speed is on a high level, it’s because the sensor detects particles in the air. However, if you think that the particle level should be low, you can carefully clean the sensor with a vacuum to see if it makes any difference.

The noise level is very high and disturbs me, what can I do?

The noise level differs depending on the fan speed. We recommend setting your purifier to the lowest fan speed before going to sleep if you’re disturbed by the noise.

The IKEA Home smart app can’t find my STARKVIND air purifier. What should I do?

The wireless connectivity range can be affected by different building materials and where units are placed. Try to move the air purifier closer to your TRÅDFRI gateway.

Can the filters be recycled?

The filters should be recycled in a responsible way according to local regulation in each market.

What filters should I use for my IKEA air purifier(s)?

Only original IKEA FÖRNUFTIG filters for particle removal and FÖRNUFTIG filter for gas cleaning can be used in the FÖRNUFTIG air purifier. Only original IKEA STARKVIND filters for particle removal and STARKVIND filter for gas cleaning can be used in the STARKVIND air purifiers.
